The legend of Medusa is from the Hellenic Age, she was the best known of the three Gorgon daughters of the sea deities Phorcys and Ceto. They are described as monsters with snakes for hair, boarlike tusks, golden wings and brazen claws. With their fiery eyes and piercing looks, they turn anyone who looks at them to stone. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. Medusa in the center implies the protection of the goddess Athena, who wore the Gorgon’s likeness on her aegis.
